Volume 1 Number 30

The Editor's Desk:

August 1 - August 7, 2010

Our mission is to present spiritual responses to some of the greatest challenges that life has to offer: events like death of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, serious accident or illness, crises of identity, recovery from addiction, loss of job or career, retirement, and other life-altering events.
It's Sad to Say, "Goodbye!"
That's right: after only 24 issues, it's time to say, "Farewell" to the Spirit in Crisis Journal. Hope springs eternal, but, in this very preoccupied world, our hopes are very often disappointed. That's the way of life: but each ending brings with it lessons learned and hopes for new beginnings. Please read the letter at the bottom of today's edition for more information. In the meantime, "Thanks!" to both our dedicated contributors and our equally-dedicated readers. It was you who made this e-Zine possible!

At the same time, the Spirit in Crisis Journal won't be going away completely. Our inspired articles will remain here for you to read and re-read at your leisure. Also, I'll be cross-posting my regular articles from the Midlife Mastery Journal here, as well. So, keep coming back to visit: You're always welcome!

The Moment Between Before and After

Every now and then we are thrown into an awareness that life as we have known it has changed forever. It happens in a moment and typically is characterized by some life altering event; a transition point in our current existence that is greatly impacted by how we transition from “before” the event into the “after.” [Continue]

The Consuming Corrosion of Fear

The Consuming Corrosion of Fear

I have come to believe that there are actually two types of fear. The one – healthy caution – provides us with the protection that we need against rash decision-making. There is another type of fear, however, that arises from insecurity and self-doubt. [Continue]

Receive Sustenance

Receive Sustenance

One of the most difficult things to do when I am challenged is to Receive. I’ve witnessed this in many others as well. We simply aren’t able to receive what is coming to us. We are so fixated on the problem that we can’t see, receive, appreciate, or assimilate what we have and what is coming to us. [Continue]

The Dimming of Our Spirit

In some strange way we are like ET. We were given an incredible light inside of us. Some of us call it our soul, others refer to it as our spirit, still others acknowledge it as our connection to a higher power. [Continue]

The Prostate Cancer Surgeon as Healer — Pain-Control on the Cutting-Edge

Doctors aren't gods, but in their ability to sustain life they sometimes seem one-step removed! [Continue]

The F-Word You Need to Use

There's an F-word you need to use. So … what do you think that word is? Now don’t be too hasty with your answer. Read on and discover if you came up with the right word. [Continue]

Messy Middles of Change

Messy Middles of Change

You know the saying: “when one door closes, another door opens.” My reflection today involves the corridor in between. A number of people have theorized about change. At a basic level, though, the corridor model is helpful. It suggests, perhaps in oversimplification, that there is an entrance, an exit, and a messy middle. The twelve steps of [Continue]

Feed Me, I Need to Be Made Whole

Feed Me, I Need to Be Made Whole

I’ve been thinking a lot about my spirit this past week. What is it that feeds this spirit, gives it life and connects it to my whole being? I suppose these thoughts are connected to what is happening in our world today and especially the efforts around the re-building of Haiti. [Continue]

When They Stop Listening

When They Stop Listening

Apart from outright physical and emotional abuse, I believe that many (if not all) relationships "on the rocks" could be healed under the right circumstances. From my perspective, the fact that this healing so often fails to take place could be an indication that one or both of the partners have stopped listening. Additionally, ceasing to listen [Continue]

Going Straight to Source

I have received St. Theresa's prayer in email form a few times in my life, always when most needed. This morning, when a community member forwarded it to me, it sparked a different level of reflection, one that encouraged me to enter into the silence of my soul and ask some fairly deep questions. [Continue]
